Word of Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

It is our pleasure to invite all Thyroidologists and guests to Milan for the 45th Annual Meeting of the European Thyroid Association. The Local Organizing Committee is delighted to host the ETA Annual Meeting in Milan for the second time after the successful meeting of 1999.

As in 1999, the congress will be held in the historical building of the UNIVERSITY OF MILAN named the Ca’ Granda, a monumental headquarters in via Festa del Perdono, in the centre of Milan. Ca’ Granda was founded by the will of Francesco Sforza and his wife Bianca Maria Visconti who, as a sign of gratitude to God for their conquest of the Duchy, wished to build a Spedale di Poveri (hospital for the poor people). Begun in 1456, the construction continued for more than 300 years thanks to legacies and donations from Milanese citizens. The project was entrusted to Antonio Averlino, known as Filarete, and was subsequently completed by architects Solari, Amadeo and Pessina. The entire complex - for centuries considered, in Europe as in Italy, a fine example of advanced hospital architecture – was heavily damaged by the Anglo-American air raids in 1943, and at the end of the Second World War it was handed over to the University of Milan. After an accurate restoration, in 1958 it became the main seat of the University.

This venue is at walking distance from the Piazza del Duomo, the Galleria, the Scala theater, the main Milanese museums of ancient and modern arts, the Castello Sforzesco. The city center is easily reachable by subway from the train/bus stations that are connected with Malpensa Airport and by a dedicated bus line from the Linate Airport.

The city center of Milan offers a large choice of hotels of different categories. A large array of restaurants, where you will be able to enjoy Milanese and Italian cuisine (try the famous “risotto with saffron and ossobuco”!), as well as pubs will be easy to find either in the city center or in the nightlife districts of Brera or Navigli (canals).

Working in concert with the ETA Executive Committee we will do our best to organize an exciting and unforgettable meeting. We expect an excellent scientific program: your most recent research results are to be brought to and presented in Milan!
